Future Schools: A Guide for Parents
Rose Hill School has an excellent track record of pupils progressing to a wide range of independent senior schools, with many achieving scholarships. By the end of Year 8, all pupils will have been offered a place at an independent senior school. Our aim is to find the right school for each child and prepare them for their future lives. There is no single ‘best school’; the best school is one where your child will be happy, thrive and fulfil their potential.
Planning Ahead
The process can begin as early as Year 5, as some schools have early registration deadlines. In the Spring Term, parents in Years 3–8 are invited to our Future Schools’ Fair, and parents can meet with the Head to discuss senior school options. During Years 4 and 5, we encourage families to visit schools they are considering. Look beyond academic results and consider your child’s individual needs, including pastoral care, co-education or single-sex education, day or boarding, sport, creative opportunities and the school environment.
By Year 6, we recommend registering with two or three senior schools and carefully checking their individual deadlines and entry requirements. The Head and Head of Upper School are available to advise families throughout the process.
Senior School Entrance
Many senior schools use pre-tests, usually in Year 6 or 7, and some also include interviews. Rose Hill School prepares pupils through their normal curriculum and targeted practice where appropriate. All pupils follow the Common Entrance course in Year 8. Examinations are taken in English, Mathematics, Science, French and Latin, with different levels available in some subjects. Senior schools set their own required grades, and the School works closely with families to ensure that expectations are realistic and appropriate.
Scholarships and Bursaries
Senior schools may offer scholarships for academic achievement, sport, music, art, drama or all-round performance. These are highly competitive, and requirements vary considerably between schools. Bursaries may also be available to families who meet a school’s financial criteria.
For advice about senior school choices, admissions or scholarships, please contact the Head.
