Years 1 & 2

Year 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1) builds upon and extends the key skills taught through the 7 Areas of Learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our Creative Curriculum challenges and excites the children, developed around questions to spark an interest in your child and encourage their natural curiosity. The topic-based approach allows us to deliver all areas of the curriculum in an interactive way and enable children to make connections across all areas of their learning. It is further enriched through trips, visiting speakers, theatre groups and outdoor learning within the school grounds.

In addition, children are taught and are able to make use of the amazing facilities in the Prep School. They are taught by specialist teachers for French, Music, IT and PE. There are weekly swimming lessons and a wide range of lunchtime and after school clubs for children to choose from to provide the extra layer of opportunity and fun!

Rose Hill School has a strong sense of community, where teachers, parents and pupils are supportive of one another. The personal development of all pupils remains an important aim and this is achieved through continuous learning opportunities; activities both in and beyond the learning environment which are a mixture of teacher-led tasks and guided independent exploration, similar to the learning techniques of the Early Years. We teach the children the important life skills of resilience, persistence, organisation, getting along and which are introduced to children through characters such as ‘Greta Get Along.’

Leaving Reception behind and moving into Year 1 can feel like a big step for both children and parents. Located in the same building as the Early Years department, children are familiar with staff and routines, making the transition from Reception to Year 1 a move the children can make with confidence

Close liaison with the Lower School ensures a seamless transition into Year 3.

“Rose Hill School is an excellent independent school in every regard and the teachers really care about the children.” Parent
