Our Nursery offers endless opportunities to play and explore. Resources are carefully placed and set up to enhance the children’s problem-solving skills along with the implementation of sustained shared thinking which is promoted by knowledgeable staff. Staff take time to recognise children’s interests and weave these into invitations and provocations of learning.
Play is the way in which children learn new skills and enhance the skills they have already acquired. There will be structured times throughout the day when the children can focus on specific areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The children will be encouraged to develop their numeracy skills using fun actvities in their local environment. Children develop their language skills further through the implementation of Sound or Letter of the Week which will take part in a show and tell circle time.
French, Spanish, ICT, physical education, music, weekly swimming lessons and forest school are all part of the weekly timetable. Experienced staff will encourage children with their self-care and independence skills through the positive ‘can do attitudes’ when taking off and putting on shoes, wellington boots, getting changed, washing hands, selecting their food at lunch times and pouring their drinks. All these life skills will prepare them for their transition through to Reception.

Dance allows the younger children to express their creativity whilst learning the foundations of classical ballet and fundamental dance techniques across various genres. Most importantly, we ensure the children have fun! Our lessons incorporate a variety of props and equipment, such as wands, ribbons, hopscotch, bean bags, balls, flags and many more items to enhance the experience. Lessons are taught by our qualified dance teacher Mrs Bennett.
Rose Hill School Nursery has its own Forest School site and takes place throughout the year and encourages children to take ownership of their own unique learning. Children develop independence and imagination skills and learn to take manageable risks within clear boundaries, acquiring skills for life.
Forest School builds self-esteem and confidence as the children develop emotionally and spiritually in the natural outdoor environment. The children’s interests are the key focus of all activities, which can include but are not limited to, den building, bug hunting, climbing, transient art and mud sculpting. We aim to give the children the time and space to explore and experience the natural environment through first hand practical activities.
Physical education provides content and instruction designed to develop confidence, knowledge, and behaviours for the physical fitness of children of all ages and abilities. One of the most essential things physical education does is assist children in developing and improving their core and motor skills. Sessions will include key skills such as learning how to throw, catch, skip, and kick, which all support learning and link to the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Sessions are fun, energetic and full of skills that help children learn basic elements needed for promoting positive physical development.
Pupils swim weekly in our warm indoor pool. With a focus on independent swimming pupils swim on their front and backs, tread water and dive to collect objects. At the end of the year pupils are often able to demonstrate head down swimming, lifting their heads to breathe and often achieving 5 and even 10m of independent swimming.
Music sessions are planned and delivered weekly by our specialist music teacher, Mrs Harrod. All children have the opportunity to develop their imagination and creativity by engaging in various musical activities; everyone can participate in singing, repeating actions, listening to music, responding through movement and playing instruments whilst enhancing their understanding of self-expression and emotions. Mrs Harrod uses teddies, toys and puppets to teach and build a repertoire of nursery rhymes, clapping games and interactive songs. In addition, the children learn skills in sharing instruments, taking turns, working together, understanding social situations, developing self-esteem and collaboration. They have the space to create music individually and as a whole group, the opportunities to make their own choices, receive support when needed, and feel the joy of joining in, singing and playing together, and begin to talk about their favourite music or activities.
The children also participate in various performances throughout the year, including Harvest, Spring and Christmas and other festivals, concerts or expressive arts extravaganzas.
While ICT is taught as a standalone lesson by our Head of ICT, our pupils interact with technology on a daily basis, inside and outside of the classroom. ICT lessons are tailored to their developmental stage and we believe in the transformative power of technology to enhance early communication, language, and literacy skills. By integrating technology into our curriculum, we provide children with diverse learning opportunities. In our classrooms and throughout the school, children have access to a variety of technological tools and resources, fostering their digital literacy and preparing them for the future.
