Year 3’s Inspiring Visit to RHS Wisley

Date Posted: Friday 01 March 2024

On Monday, 26th February, Year 3 pupils embarked on an exciting educational adventure to RHS Wisley. This hands-on trip was filled with wonder, discovery, and plenty of learning opportunities, enriching the children’s understanding of science and the natural world.

The day began with a warm welcome from Kyle, who led an engaging session on plant adaptations. Pupils learned how plants thrive in challenging environments, such as rainforests or arid climates, by examining and touching a variety of fascinating specimens. This tactile approach helped the children observe unique features like waxy leaves, spiky surfaces, and vibrant flowers up close, bringing textbook lessons vividly to life.

The excitement continued as the group explored Wisley’s giant glasshouse. Pupils were awestruck by the towering plants and the incredible diversity within the rainforest and desert biomes. The visit coincided with a special dinosaur exhibition, which added an unexpected thrill. The children enthusiastically connected what they saw to their classroom topics, and many left inspired to learn more about both prehistoric life and botany.

After a refreshing lunch and some fun in the playground, the day ended on a high note with each pupil planting their own Tradescantia cutting to take home. This activity reinforced key concepts of plant care and responsibility while giving them a memento to nurture and watch grow.

The trip was much more than a day out—it was an enriching experience that sparked curiosity, deepened understanding, and fostered teamwork and independence. The teachers were incredibly proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the pupils were throughout the visit, and many of them are already asking, “When can we go back?”

Year 3’s adventure at RHS Wisley was a fantastic blend of learning, exploration, and fun—a day to remember for pupils and teachers alike.
