On Thursday Year 5 took part in our Wonder Day. The day was dedicated to showing our children the exciting opportunities available in Years 7 and 8 at Rose Hill. The activities were all based around our five school keys to success – organisation, confidence, resilience, persistence and getting along.

The children enjoyed orienteering in the school grounds with Mr Stacey. The focus was on confidence with the children using new map reading skills to locate all the clippers successfully as a team. They then entered the ‘challenge room’ with Mrs Scarbrough. They had to use all their resilience and perseverance to build the tallest structure only using spaghetti and marshmallows. Awaiting them next was Mrs Morgan in the theatre. A selection of drama games and role-playing activities saw them really working together, getting along and ended with solving a conflict situation through short group performances. Finally, the children made a well-earned smoothie with Mr Hinchliffe. They discussed the importance of our ‘five a day’ and that it can be hard to remember. With a little organisation though, they can ensure they get the right amount of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that our bodies need.

After lunch we tackled some chemistry in the lab. We identified mystery gases produced by some chemical reactions. We managed to extinguish fire with carbon dioxide and identified oxygen gas by reigniting a glowing splint. We then headed to Mrs Bailey for a mindfulness session. We discussed what makes you feel strong and safe in your life and individually created a tree of strength.

Parents were then invited to our assembly at the end of the day. We celebrated our successes from the day, handed out some coveted ‘keys’ and were very lucky to have the opportunity to listen to Gwen Taylor-Hall from Eastbourne College.

A fantastic day was had by all.
