Independent Project Qualification
At Rose Hill School, we are proud to celebrate the exceptional achievements of our Year 8 pupils as they complete their Independent Project Qualification (IPQ), a challenging and enriching conclusion to their academic journey with us.
The IPQ, set by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB), is a demanding independent research task that gives pupils the opportunity to investigate a topic of personal interest, conduct in-depth research, and present their findings with clarity and confidence. It represents the culmination of a carefully planned programme of independent learning that begins in Year 3 and develops throughout the school.
This year’s projects demonstrated an impressive breadth of interests, with pupils exploring bold and thought-provoking questions such as:

Should we ban smartphones for under 16s

Is golf an elitist sport

Is religion a bad idea

Do animals help with mental health

Is sourdough bread scientifically healthier than normal bread
Other pupils examined the benefits and drawbacks of mobile phones, considered whether TikTok poses a threat as Chinese spyware, explored the potential of a four day working week, and investigated how the way of life of the Kogi tribe is under threat. These projects reflect a mature understanding of a wide range of societal, ethical, scientific and global issues.
Throughout the IPQ process, pupils developed and applied a variety of academic and personal skills. They conducted structured research, evaluated sources with care, built strong IT and presentation skills, and delivered their findings to an audience with poise and assurance. The standard of both written reports and verbal presentations was exceptionally high.
The IPQ is much more than a single academic task. It is the final stage in a sequence of project-based learning that begins in the Lower School and grows in complexity each year. By Year 8, pupils are well prepared to take full ownership of their work and approach independent learning with confidence and enthusiasm.
The skills developed through the IPQ will be of lasting value as pupils move on to their senior schools, where many will take on the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and other research-based academic challenges.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 8 pupils. Their commitment, maturity and creativity are a credit to themselves and a true reflection of the spirit of scholarship we aim to foster at Rose Hill School.
