Year 6 trip to Newhaven Fort

Year 6 visited Newhaven Fort last Monday. We arrived at the fort and were met by Heather. She escorted us to the education room where she talked to us about the fort and showed us some of their exhibits from the Second World War. It was amazing how much noise the air raid siren made! We all then went to the Air Raid Shelter to experience what it was like to be in a shelter during a German raid. There was a lot of screaming when the lights went out and the explosions started.

We then saw a 15 minute film about the history of Newhaven Fort. It was designed and built by Captain John Ardagh in the 19th Century to protect the coast from a possible French invasion. The fort was used and defended in the 20th Century during both the First and Second World Wars.

6L and 6W completed two worksheets on the fort and the Second World War. They had to find out the information from inside the fort and from the Home Front exhibition room.

We were lucky to have the fort almost to ourselves and the weather cooperated to make it a great trip.

Year 6 Geography trip to the River Cuckmere and Seven Sisters Country Park.

12 March 2020

Whilst the heavy rain did make the trip via Alfriston village a little tricky it also served to highlight the spectacular meanders and creeks of the River Cuckmere’s floodplain in the Spring sunshine and allow the ‘New Cut’ to be in full spate and speed along to the sea at low tide. As it did so the fast-flowing water actively undercut and eroded the shingle beach causing mini land or ‘shingle’ slides before our very eyes.
