Y8 trip to Dover Castle

Year 8 travelled to Dover Castle last Friday as part of their Common Entrance studies on the Middle Ages. We had to contend with persistent rain but fortunately we were under cover for much of the day. Split into two groups for their first assignments; one group visited the exhibition on the Angevin Empire. There was a lot of information in this exhibition on Henry II’s family and the reasons for extending and enlarging Dover Castle. The second group had a work sheet to complete on the Princess of Wales’s regiment. This was a fascinating exhibition covering the history of the regiment from the 1600’s up to modern times. The groups then swapped over and managed to complete both assignments by lunchtime. After lunch we spent an hour exploring Henry II’s Great Tower. This is on 3 levels and we found out what each floor was used for. The Great Tower is hugely impressive and you are able to discover a great deal of information about life at the time of Henry II.
A very enjoyable visit which should help our Year 8 pupils with their History studies.

Year 6 Geography trip to the River Cuckmere and Seven Sisters Country Park.

12 March 2020

Whilst the heavy rain did make the trip via Alfriston village a little tricky it also served to highlight the spectacular meanders and creeks of the River Cuckmere’s floodplain in the Spring sunshine and allow the ‘New Cut’ to be in full spate and speed along to the sea at low tide. As it did so the fast-flowing water actively undercut and eroded the shingle beach causing mini land or ‘shingle’ slides before our very eyes.
