Compass Curriculum

Art & Design Technology

Where children learn to make, design and create with confidence

Across the school, pupils are taught by specialist teachers in purpose-built creative spaces, including a dedicated art studio with kiln and a fully equipped DT workshop with tools and machinery. Creativity runs through daily learning and our wider Compass Curriculum, nurturing curiosity, enterprise, adventure and philanthropy in practical, exciting ways.

Art: explore, express, imagine

Your child learns to look closely, think boldly and create work they are truly proud of. Through drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and mixed media, pupils develop fine motor skills, visual awareness and the confidence to use art as a tool for expression.

What this looks like in the classroom

Specialist art teaching from the early years upwards
Access to a dedicated art studio with professional equipment and kiln firing
Regular exposure to diverse artists, styles and cultural influences
Space to develop personal ideas and produce high-quality finished pieces
Opportunities to display artwork proudly around the school and in exhibitions

Art is woven through our creative Compass Curriculum in the younger years, where themes and real-world topics inspire imaginative outcomes and deeper understanding.

Design technology: build, test, solve

In design technology, pupils become problem-solvers, inventors and engineers. They learn how things work – and how to improve them – using safe tools, modern equipment and structured guidance.

What pupils get to experience

Hands-on creating using wood, plastics, card, fabrics and digital tools
Use of the school’s specialist DT room with workshop machinery
Structured design challenges that teach planning, iteration and evaluation
Links with science, maths and computing to show how ideas become real products
Increasing independence as they move through the school
From simple mechanisms in Prep to sophisticated prototypes in Senior Prep, your child learns to design with purpose, test ideas practically and reflect critically on outcomes.

Clubs, events and wider opportunities

Pupils can join a wide range of co-curricular activities – with around 70 clubs offered weekly across the school – including art clubs, robotics, 3D design and craft sessions that help them extend their interests further.
Regular focus days, workshops and visiting specialists give children the chance to immerse themselves in bigger creative challenges and explore new mediums in a full-day format.

How art & design technology support future success

Through both subjects, pupils naturally develop the key competencies Rose Hill School values – resilience, collaboration, independence, confidence and organisation. These character habits are threaded through daily creativity and prepare your child for life.
